Daisy Art Parade 2024- PLAN AHEAD: Times And Places for Parade Day!

This year’s parade will take place on Saturday, April 13 at noon.

8 A.M.–10 A.M.

Drop off your parade art and unload on Norfolk Avenue where it meets Campbell Avenue (near Roanoke Typewriter Sales Company). You will be able to turn from Campbell Ave onto Norfolk Ave (under I581) and we will have volunteers there to help you unload and direct traffic between 8am and 10am. Once you unload, we recommend parking in the Elmwood parking lot: Parking is free on weekends, and it is across the street from where the parade terminates

11 A.M. Line Up

We will line up, starting at 11am along Norfolk Avenue- the front of the parade will be at Norfolk Ave and Market Street and the rear of the parade will be under the Williamson Road ramp, near the Taubman Museums’ café.

8 A.M.–11 A.M.

Check-in at the sign in booth between 8am and 11am to get your parade place assignment and raffle tickets for all participants! The check-in booth will be on Norfolk Ave (behind the Taubman Museum of Arts) near where the covered pedestrian bridge to The Hotel Roanoke is located.

12 P.M. Start

The parade will depart at noon sharp. We will be heading directly south (via Market square and Market Street) to Elmwood Park. We have the park for a few hours after and use of the stage, so we can have raffle drawings, listen to artists perform, mingle, and get to enjoy fellowship for a few hours after the parade.

BE AWARE, there is a bottleneck on this route- at Pearl Fu Plaza just south of Church Street—where a fountain is located surrounded by National flags representing the countries where we have our sister cities. When designing your Parade art BE SURE IT CAN FIT THROUGH 4 ft WIDE GAP. There are some cut curbs to negotiate and in Elmwood Park the tree branches are quite low, with perhaps just a 7 foot clearance overhead. Very tall parade art will be directed around those obstacles.

We suggest that you take some time to walk the parade route and familiarize yourselves with these and other possible obstacles that may affect your parade entry. We will have volunteers along the route to assist parade participants.

Krewes

A Krewe is a social group that wants to do something for others, like a barn raising or in this case a float building. You don’t have to be an artist or creative to be in a Krewe, but you should like rolling up your sleeves! Find a venue that suits you and maybe they will sponsor your krewe. Find teachers, nurses, community activists, neighborhood advocates, social justice warriors, people who like to cook, plan events, do crafts, play music, build stuff, take photos, make clothes, or whatever floats the boat! Sign up for our newsletter to find krewes that interest you.

Making art can bring purpose and healing when our lives are stressful. Making art can bring people together, build community, and help communities have common purpose with their neighbors. We want to help the citizens of our city start making community art by making groups that we call krewes.

On April 13 we will parade our work through the streets of Roanoke in celebration of UNESCO world art day.
